How to Get Rid of a Dead Animal in Your Yard

If you live near wooded or forested areas, or a year-round body of water, it is very likely that you have a certain degree of wildlife activity on or around your property. In this case, it is also very likely that at some point in time, you may come across a dead animal. If this ever happens, the proper course of action will depend on the particular circumstances and various other factors.

Continue reading to learn what you should do if you find a dead animal on your property.

Dead Animal Removal Tips

The most important thing you need to know about finding a dead animal is that you should never, under any circumstances, attempt to touch or tamper with the carcass. All wild animals are possible carriers of several infectious diseases, illnesses, bacteria, and parasites, all of which can be transmitted to both people and pets. Some illnesses are fatal, such as the Rabies virus.

If you find a dead animal on or around your property, here is what you need to do:

The first step to take is to secure young children and pets away from the area. If the animal is outdoors, move all children and pets indoors, and be sure the area with the animal is not accessible to the public.

If the sight is offensive to anyone, cover the carcass with a large towel, sheet, or tarp, being very careful not to come close or touch it at all. Be sure to toss this cover into the trash after the carcass has been collected.

Next, you need to assess the situation. Do this by first identifying the species. If you have a wild animal, like a raccoon or bat, you would need to take a different route than if you had a dead cat, dog, goose, or duck.

If you have a deceased cat, dog, or waterfowl species on your property, you will need to contact your local animal control company. You can find this contact information online at your county’s official webpage, or by calling the local police station for a direct referral.

If you have a deceased wild animal on your property, you would need to contact a local and licensed Indianapolis Wildlife Control Company for prompt dead animal removal services. Many companies even offer 24 hour emergency service, or may be able to offer same-day or next-day assistance.

Risks Associated With Bird Infestations

Birds are a resilient species. As creatures of true flight, birds are good at protecting themselves since they are capable of choosing the most remote and out-of-reach places to nest. They have first pick of the tallest trees, natural landings, cliffs, and hillsides. And although this is good for survival purposes, it tends to pose a bit of a problem for homeowners since birds often choose to make their nests on roofs, and in gutters, chimneys, vents, and attics. These areas are the most common places to find bird infestations in both residential and commercial properties. Houses and buildings with tall trees surrounding their property or tree canopies covering their rooftops are at higher risk of nuisance bird problems.

If you suspect that birds might be a problem around your home, continue reading to learn the most common signs to look for, and what to do if you discover a bird infestation.

Hazards Posed By Bird Infestations

The top nuisance bird species in Indiana include pigeons, starlings, grackles, crows, and house sparrows, but woodpeckers, crows, and waterfowl follow closely behind. It is important to resolve a nuisance bird problem before it can turn into a destructive infestation. If you already have a bird infestation on your hands, it is equally important to get professional assistance as soon as possible. The longer you wait to remedy a bird infestation, the more damages can accumulate, which will add to the total cost and time it takes to renovate the mess.

More unfavorably, bird infestations can pose several health risks, including transmissible respiratory diseases and lung infections such as histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis. They can also pose risks of lice, bird mites, fleas, and other parasite invasions. Bird eggs are also a target for snakes, which means a bird infestation can quickly lead to a nuisance snake problem too. Be sure you know the signs of a bird infestation.

3 Signs You Have Nesting Birds Somewhere on Your Property

There are three common signs that tell you birds are nesting nearby on your property. This is not always a bad situation, so long as birds do not become a nuisance to your home or building. However, if you have nesting birds on your property, the chances of developing a bird infestation problem in your chimney, attic, and rooftop is much higher.

It is wise to contact a local and licensed Indianapolis wildlife control company for professional bird-proofing services you can trust. But before you pick up the phone to schedule an on-site inspection, take a closer look at your property to see if the signs of nesting are present.

Natural Habitats for Indiana Birds

Bird nests are usually camouflaged in nature, or at least the best ones are. Since it is not likely that you will be able to spot one with your eyes, you have to pay close attention to other signs. First, if you have a property full of bushes, shrubs, trees, and overgrown flora, there is a much higher chance that birds are living nearby. If you live near a body of water, like a pond or creek, you can increase those chances even more.

Top 3 Signs to Look For:

❶ Destruction and Damage

Birds require materials to build their nests, so they will wander around your property collecting items like grass, feathers, trash, and more. Look for torn up grass, grass clippings, de-threaded rugs, ripped window screens, and down feather debris. These items are common materials used to build bird nests in urban areas. If you happen to see a bird with a beak full of similar materials, keep an eye on it to see where it goes. Hopefully, it heads to a bush or tree, rather than your roof or chimney.

❷ Concentrated Activity

Birds do not hang out in places without a good reason. If there is a concentration of bird activity on your property, but there is no bird feeder or bath nearby, it is highly likely that you have found their nesting area. Watch to see birds take flight to and from this area to get an idea of where the nest could be. Be especially on the lookout for pigeons and woodpeckers, as these native Indiana birds are known to settle quickly before winter comes.

❸ Excessive Bird Chatter

Birds make noises, and most often, we enjoy the sounds of their chirps, chatter, and songs. But if you notice excessive bird noise on your property that sounds more like racket than harmony, it could be because you have a colony of birds nesting nearby. In fact, if you hear nasal whining sounds, it is likely baby birds hankering to be fed. Also, woodpeckers can be quite noisy with their incessant knocking and tapping noises, which can do a lot of damage to your home’s siding, roof, and more.

What You Need to Know Before Feeding Wild Animals

Wild Animals Will Always Be Wild

Although you find the wildlife around you cute and cuddly, they are nothing of the sort. When feeding wildlife, whether at the state park or your own backyard, never get too close nor trust them. Wild animals take thousands of years to domesticate, which is why dogs and cats are most loyal pets. If you think a squirrel will love you because you feed it, think again! Wild animals are unpredictable. So before you start feeding them, be sure you think it through.

You are Giving Them an Invitation

Furthermore, when you feed wild animals on your own property, you are fully inviting them onto your property. Now, you might think they will come for the food and then leave, but not all species of animal will do this. In fact, there are several species of wildlife that are smart, and will remember your home as a source of food. Rather than coming and going, they can choose to simply make your home their own.

Wild animals, like raccoons, opossum, birds, and squirrels can enter into houses and cause a long list of damages. Not only will they soil everything with their droppings and urine, they will tear everything to pieces, stain floors and ceilings, rip attic insulation, chew electrical wiring, and more. This can eventually happen if animals remember your home as a reliable and consistent source of food.

When it comes to feeding wildlife….

❌ DON’T:

❌ Use human food to feed wildlife.
❌ Use containers with narrow tops or openings that may suffocate animals.
❌ Attempt to touch, harm, trap, kill, or domesticate a wild animal.
❌ Do not attempt to hand-feed animals.
❌ Leave garbage cans open and available, overnight.

✅ DO:

✅ Use animal-specific feeders, such as bird feeders and squirrel feeders.
✅ Place feeders far away from your house and other houses and structures.
✅ Feed less during winter seasons so animals know to hibernate somewhere else.
✅ Contact a wildlife control company if animals become aggressive or annoying.

How to Get Rid of Nuisance Snakes

Does the thought of seeing a snake slither through your garden or lawn give you the chills? Well if so, then you certainly would be alarmed if you found one looming in your home somewhere! Unfortunately, nuisance snake problems like these are more common in summer, as local snake populations are looking for dark, damp, cool places to hang out. Finding snakes all around the house, inside and out, is a frequent complaint among property owners this time of year. If you have already spotted a snake or two in your lawn, it is wise to take the necessary precautions to ensure it doesn’t become a problem.

Continue reading to learn some easy methods for protecting your property against nuisance snake threats and damages.

Nuisance Snakes

Snakes in Indiana are not typically poisonous, so that is not something you need to worry too much about when it comes to spotting snakes on your property. In fact, there are only four species of snake that are poisonous in our state, which are Massasauga Rattlesnakes, Timber Rattlesnakes, Water Moccasins (also called Eastern Cottonmouths), and Northern Copperheads, See our article, “The Only 4 Poisonous Snake Species in Indiana” to learn more about each species. The most common species of nuisance snakes around Indiana are Corn snakes and Garter snakes, both of which are non-poisonous.

Although the majority of snakes you see around your neighborhood are non-poisonous, they are still a threat in many ways, which means you do not want them hanging around. For starters, snakes are smelly, and can produce lingering odors around your backyard, patio, porch, tree house, jungle gyms, and garage; these are some common areas they like to hide. Other common areas for snakes to hide include log and lumber piles, compost piles, mulch beds, gardens, unfinished basements, shrubs alongside foundations, attics, stream banks, long grass, under downspouts, beneath large rocks, and more.

Additionally, snakes can carry diseases, which can be transmitted to both people and pets. Last, if snakes are on your property, there is potential for them to make their way inside your home and cause a long list of unpleasant destruction. They can also lay eggs, which hatch quickly, so one snake can turn into many in a matter of weeks.

Snake Removal and Control Tips:

🐍 Kitty Litter – Sprinkle cat litter around your property where you know snakes are active. They do not like the course, dry material because it bothers their scales. So snakes will avoid kitty litter at all costs.

🐍 Homemade Repellent – You can make a safe, non-toxic snake repellant solution by combing rotten eggs, cayenne pepper, and water. However, these are pungent, so you may want an OTC product instead. Just be sure it is non-toxic.

🐍 Fencing – You can add chicken wire or fencing around gardens and snake hot spots, but this method is usually not successful all on its own. Combine fencing with repellant and other methods of snake control for best results.

🐍 Environmental Changes – You can remove the attractions that snakes are after, such as the areas mentioned before where snakes like to hide. Of course, you can’t get rid of everything, so incorporate other methods for effective results.

Continue reading for tips on identifying signs of raccoon infestation and activity, as well as, what to do if you have raccoons in the attic or other area.

Nuisance Raccoon Interference

Wild raccoons can pose a number of threats to your property, inside and out. Thousands of homeowners all across the nation have dealt with the costly repairs and repercussions of a raccoon infestation or wild animal damages. It is important to know how to identify the presence of raccoons before they cause damage to your property.

Restrict their opportunity to destroy your gardens, home structure, foundations, crawl spaces, attics, garages, tool sheds, rooftops, and more. Get your confidence back as a home or property owner, and learn to recognize a raccoon colony or potential infestation before these areas and assets are damaged.

Common Raccoon Damages

Raccoons like to hide and seek shelter in warm dark areas; such as the ones mentioned above: attics, crawl spaces, garages, sheds, swimming pool covers, roof tops, gutters, shingles, under porches, beneath decks, patios, hollow trees, and more. They are intelligent creatures that can remember locations with good food and shelter sources. If your property provides this type of sough-out solace, you may be unintentionally inviting wild raccoons inside.

Here are the clues to look for that indicate raccoons are nearby or trespassing onto your property:

✅ Strong Urine Odors
✅ Pillaged Garbage Cans
✅ Missing Pet Food
✅ Torn Roof Shingles
✅ Pried Wood Beams
✅ Raccoon Droppings
✅ Strange Noises at Night
✅ Ripped or Soiled Attic Insulation

Preventing Raccoon Activity

There are several more signs that tell you raccoons are nearby. The best way to handle this situation is to remove the things that keep them interested. For example, do not leave pet dishes outside. Pet food is the ultimate treat for raccoons. It’s tasty and very nutritious.

Also, do not take your garbage cans outside the night before trash day. Raccoons are nocturnal and use the nighttime to seek out food sources; like garbage and pet food. Squirrel feeders, bird feeders, and bird baths are also very attractive novelties for raccoons. Remove these items and they may stop coming by every night.

These are a few DIY approaches to raccoon-proofing and prevention, but it requires the skill and equipment of a licensed animal control specialist to accurately control a raccoon infestation. Trust them to provide accurate and efficient diagnostics to determine what attracts raccoons to your property, and how to implement certain professional strategies to thwart their return.

If you have raccoons in the attic, or other area of your home, a licensed professional is your only hope. They retain the proper equipment, experience, licensing, and training to safely and humanely remove raccoons and provide minor restorations and repairs.

How to Get Rid of Bats in the Attic

Bats are a wonderful asset to nature; however, when it comes to our homes, we prefer them to stay far away.  It is a common call for pest and animal control technicians to remove bats from residential properties because they have somehow gained access inside a family’s personal space.  Bats can be very destructive when it comes to our attics and other areas of a house.  It is important to learn how to identify a bat control issues within your home or around your property before the damages accumulate to mass amounts.

Continue reading to learn about bat control, how to determine if you have a bat infestation, and what to do if you discover bats in or around your residential property.

Signs of a Bat Infestation

When a home or property is infested with bats, there are various tell-tale signs that prove they could be living and nesting nearby.  If you see large nest-like structures in these areas, then most likely, you have a bat or other animal living there.  Bats are also known to use playgrounds, jungle gyms, sheds, garages, and objects covered with tarps as roosting spots.  These are common areas to examine if you suspect there may be a bat infestation on the exterior of your home and property.

When it comes to the interior of a home, there are similar signs like the ones mentioned above, plus more.  For example, many homeowners discover a foul or faint odor throughout the house caused by a mass accumulation of bat droppings. Besides odor, strange noises at night from within the house could be bats communicating and interacting during their active hours.  Also, blackish-brown stains around holes or openings in a home could be caused from the oils in a bat’s fur rubbing off with each entry and exit.

How to Get Rid of Bats

To get rid of a bat problem, one must first determine that the suspected culprit is indeed a bat.  Once this is figured out, a person can implement some “do-it-yourself” strategies to get rid of bats.  One way to accomplish this is to bat-proof your home.  For example, you can remove all the outside water sources, turn off or remove outdoor lighting, close up any obvious entry and exit points that bats can use, or choose to install a bat house on the exterior of your property to give bats an alternative option for roosting.

The most effective way to solve a bat problem is to consult a professional in the animal control industry; preferably a bat expert.  They retain the necessary insurance, training, equipment, licenses, tools, and knowledge to professional manage bat invasions, damages, and more.  If bats have impaired the structural integrity of your home, it is highly recommended to call a professional bat removal and control company for affordable and safe restorations.

Dealing With Bat Damages

When bats invade a home, there are several damages they are capable of.  For example, bat urine and guano can over-accumulate, saturating particle board, sheet rock, insulation, dry wall, ceilings, carpeting, hardwood flooring, and much more.  Theses restorations can add up quickly when it comes to your budget.  This is why it is crucial to manage a bat infestation issue right away, before the damages become too expensive.

Other than structural damage, bats can spread disease and bugs.  Bat mites are a very common threat for homes with a bat infestation. Bat mites are similar to lice or scabies, and can be a troubling ailment to get rid of.  Bat mites can affect adults, children, and even household pets. Another possible infectious disease caused from bat invasions is called Histoplasmosis.  It is a respiratory illness caused from the inhalation of poisonous spores from bat guano.

Local Wildlife You Might See This Spring and Summer

Our state is mostly known for our corn, race cars, and football; however, Indiana actually has a lot more to offer. With each season, Hoosiers witness magnificent changes in the beautiful flora and fauna in their surrounding environments, a characteristic commonly overlooked in Indiana. The fall and winter seasons bring new color and snow, and animals that are covered in fur. Then the spring and summer rolls in, bringing out the sun and hibernating animals from their dens. The animals here in Indiana are fascinating and fun to learn about.

🐹 Squirrels

Squirrels are recognized in the medium-sized rodent category. They are slender-bodied animals, covered in a thick fur. They have a long bushy tail, great vision, and strong claws for climbing and grasping their food.  They make their homes in trees where they nest their young as well. They typically feed on foods rich in protein and fat, such as: nuts, seeds, tree buds, small insects, conifer cones, fruits, and fungi.  They are widely seen in forests and woods, as well as, residential and urban areas.

🐺 Raccoons

Raccoons are a medium-sized mammal often seen in areas with mixed deciduous trees. They have black stripes on their long tails, and their bodies are covered in a dense and course fur. This fur allows them to survive in harsh weather conditions, by staying cool in the hot seasons and warm in the cold ones.  One signature trait raccoons share is a mask-like black patch over their eyes, making them look like bandits. This, along with their mischievous behavior in residential areas, has coined them the nickname, “bandits”. Although mischievous, they are very intelligent and have dexterous hands that allow easy gripping and climbing; and they create dens for their homes where they breed and feed their offspring.

🦌 Deer

Deer are seen all over rural areas of Indiana. They live in forest, woods, meadows, and protected nature parks. There are different species of deer, all similar and not-so-similar to each other. Deer breed and produce offspring called fawns. The female deer is a doe and the males are called bucks.  Male deer are characterized the most by their long and powerful antlers. A doe does not have antlers, and are sometimes lighter in coat color. This allows them to blend better to their natural surroundings and keep out of the sight of predators. Deer are a wonderful and tasty source of meat for many families in North America and around the world.

But Beware…

The wildlife in Indiana is certainly a wonderful, yet overlooked asset in this state. Animals in the forests and wooded areas should stay protected by respecting their habitats and not over using their resources. There are circumstances when wildlife may lose their way, or be forced into urban and residential areas. In this case, it is important to contact a wildlife removal expert to safely and humanely remove and relocate wild animals from your property.  Read our blog, “Tips for Avoiding Dangerous Wildlife Encounters” in the meantime.

Skunk Abatement Advice

There are certain steps a homeowner can take that will make their property seem undesirable to skunks and other pesky critters. As long as you do the things mentioned in this article, you should have no problem taming a skunk infestation on your property. Keep in mind that the most common area for a skunk to hang out is under the front porch or patio because they prefer these dark, cooler areas, which provides them with a means of protection for themselves and their young.

So now you know that if you cannot figure out where a skunk is on your property, but you smell it, it is most likely underneath the porch or deck. Do not try to take a look or attempt to trap, touch, or harm any skunks. Not only is this illegal without a proper permit, it is wrong. There are several safe and humane ways to get rid of skunks other than killing or harming them.

DIY Skunk Control Tips

There are various do-it-yourself methods and strategies you can implement to prevent skunks from trespassing onto your property, all of which are easy, safe, and humane. For instance, read our blog, “A Recipe for Non-Toxic Animal Repellent” to learn how to make your own chemical-free skunk repelling solution! Keep in mind, if you find a colony of baby and mother skunks, you must call a local Indianapolis wildlife control company for professional assistance. They use safe and humane methods to extract skunks and relocate them to a faraway habitat.

As for yourself, here are some skunk abating tips to try:

☛ If you know there are no skunks beneath your porch or patio, go ahead and block off all access point so they cannot make this area their home in the future. Be diligent with this because skunks can surprisingly squeeze through some very small spaces.

☛ Never leave pet food or dishes outside. This is a free, easy, and tasty snack for skunks and many other wild animals. If you have bags of pet food in your shed or garage, be sure to lock them up.

☛ Remove all other food sources from your property, including bird feeders and squirrel feeders.

☛ If you have a garden, always be sure to install fencing around them to prevent skunks from accessing any crops.

☛ Never take the trash out the night before garbage pickup day. And always secure the trash can lids to prevent animals from smelling food and enticing them to find it.

☛ Eliminate hiding spots for skunks by keeping tall grass and weeds mowed. If they cannot hide, they will not enter the premises at all.
